The Australian Government has announced changes to the English Language Requirements for Student Visas and Temporary Graduate Visas.

These changes will take effect for all visa applications submitted on or after March 23, 2024.

The Migration Strategy highlights that the enhanced English language requirements aim to ensure that international students have a positive educational experience in Australia and are better prepared for the skilled workforce if they choose to apply for a graduate visa after their studies.

Temporary Graduate Visa (TGV)

The minimum IELTS score required for a TGV will increase from 6.0 to 6.5 (or equivalent), with at least 5.5 in each test component (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).

The validity period for an English language test used for a TGV application will be reduced from three years to one year. Applicants must now provide proof that they have taken an English language test within the year preceding their visa application date.

Student Visa

The minimum IELTS score required for a student visa will rise from 5.5 to 6.0 (or equivalent).

The minimum IELTS score for a packaged ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) will increase from 4.5 to 5.0.

There will be no changes for students solely studying English through ELICOS.

For students enrolled in university foundation or gateway programs that offer recognized English language training, the required IELTS score will be 5.5 (or equivalent).
